# Best Concrete Toronto: Driveways, Repair, Patios, Stamped, Porch Repair, Polishing, Steps & Walkways in Toronto & the GTA

Best Concrete Toronto has extensive GTA experience providing expert concrete driveways, concrete repair, concrete patios, stamped concrete, porch repair, concrete polishing, concrete steps, concrete walkways, concrete lifting and mudjacking, foundation repair, and commercial concrete flooring across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. Every job is poured to CSA A23.1 exposure class C-2 with 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, 15M rebar or 6x6 welded wire mesh reinforcement, and a 6-inch compacted granular A base.

Repair-first assessment on every job: we measure crack width with a crack card, sound the slab with a chain drag for hollow spots, and check rebar depth with a cover meter before quoting replacement. When the slab can be saved, mudjacking, resurfacing, or epoxy stitching typically saves Toronto homeowners around 40 percent versus tear-out and re-pour. Every quote is confirmed in writing before mobilisation, and the number does not change unless the scope of work changes.

Toronto concrete specification guide

## Ontario Freeze-Thaw Concrete Specification Guide

What separates a Toronto slab that lasts 30 years from one that fails in 12 is the specification the contractor pours to. Here is what our crew specifies on every GTA job, and why.

### CSA A23.1 Exposure Classes for GTA Concrete

The Canadian concrete code (CSA A23.1) classifies concrete by exposure severity. Toronto residential driveways, patios, and porches are C-2 exposure (chloride-exposed, freeze-thaw). This mandates air-entrained concrete at 5 to 8 percent air, 32 MPa minimum compressive strength at 28 days per ASTM C39, and a water-to-cement ratio at or below 0.45. Interior slabs (basement floors) fall under N exposure and only need 25 MPa without air-entrainment. Foundation walls in contact with soil are F-2 or C-XL depending on chloride exposure.

We spec 32 MPa air-entrained mix on every residential Toronto exterior pour whether the quote requires it or not. A driveway poured to 25 MPa non-air-entrained will scale, spall, and crumble at the surface inside 5 to 10 winters. The upgrade to 32 MPa air-entrained adds roughly $2 per sq ft in material cost and doubles the slab's usable life.

### Air Entrainment and Why It Matters in Toronto

Air-entraining admixtures introduce microscopic air bubbles (10 to 250 microns) throughout the concrete matrix. When water in the pore structure freezes and expands roughly 9 percent, these voids absorb the pressure that would otherwise crack the paste. Toronto sees 100+ freeze-thaw cycles per winter (documented by Environment Canada climate normals for Pearson Airport). Non-air-entrained concrete cannot survive that cycling.

The target range is 5 to 8 percent entrained air by volume, verified on-site with a Type B pressure meter (ASTM C231) before we pour. Too little air and the slab loses freeze-thaw resistance. Too much and compressive strength drops by roughly 5 percent per additional 1 percent air. We test every load and reject any batch outside the spec.

### Reinforcement: 15M Rebar vs Welded Wire Mesh vs Fibre

15M rebar on 300mm centres tied to L-brackets at expansion joints is the strongest residential reinforcement pattern and what we recommend for driveways, patio slabs, and porches on marginal subgrade. 6x6 W2.9/W2.9 welded wire mesh is a lower-cost alternative for basic patios and walkways on prepared subgrade. Micro-synthetic fibre (polypropylene at 0.9 kg/m3) supplements rebar for shrinkage control but does NOT replace primary reinforcement.

All reinforcement gets chairs to hold it at slab mid-depth (2 inches from bottom on a 4-inch slab) with a minimum 40mm concrete cover per CSA A23.1 clause 6.6. Rebar tied at intersections with 16-gauge wire, no crossed bars floating loose.

### Sub-base, Sealers, and Chloride Protection

6-inch compacted granular A base beneath every exterior slab, compacted to 98 percent standard Proctor density in maximum 6-inch lifts. Geotextile fabric between subgrade and granular where the underlying soil is clay (most of Toronto) to prevent fines migration and pumping. Saw-cut control joints at 24 to 30 times slab thickness (every 8 to 10 feet on a 4-inch slab), cut within 12 hours of the pour before shrinkage cracking starts.

Silane siloxane penetrating sealer applied after 28-day cure blocks chloride ingress from road salt without changing surface appearance or slip characteristics. Reapply every 3 to 5 years. Acrylic film-forming sealers are cheaper but wear off in 12 to 24 months and can trap moisture. On decorative and stamped work we upgrade to a lithium silicate densifier plus a matte urethane topcoat for chemical resistance.

None of the specifications above are optional in a properly-poured Toronto slab. If your quote does not name the concrete strength (MPa), the air-entrainment target (5-8 percent), the exposure class (C-2 for driveways), the rebar size and spacing, and the sub-base preparation, ask the contractor to rewrite it. A quote missing these numbers is a quote for whatever mix arrives on the truck that day.

#### Additional Standards We Specify on Every Job

ICRI CSP-3 to CSP-5 surface profile for overlays and coating adhesion (measured with the ICRI surface-profile comparator chips), Ontario Building Code (OBC) Part 9 for exterior stairs and structural steps with proper riser and run ratios, Type 30 high-early strength cement for cold-weather pours down to -10°C with insulated hoarding, Delta-MS dimpled drainage membrane on foundation walls with weeping tile tie-in, carbon fibre stitching grid across active foundation cracks larger than 3mm, shot-blasted surface prep before polymer-modified overlays or epoxy coatings, and semi-rigid polyurea joint filler for warehouse floors under forklift traffic. Every quote lists which of these apply to your specific job so you can compare quotes apples-to-apples instead of guessing what is included.

Toronto concrete problems

## The Four Concrete Problems We Are Called About Most

Toronto clay soil, freeze-thaw cycling and road salt cause predictable damage. Most of it is repairable for far less than a tear-out.

### Freeze-Thaw and Salt Damage

Toronto puts concrete through a hundred freeze-thaw cycles a winter, then coats it in road salt. Surfaces scale, edges crumble, and rebar starts to corrode from the inside.

## Concrete Questions Toronto Homeowners Ask Us

### help How much does a concrete driveway cost in Toronto?

expand\_more

Concrete driveways in Toronto run $10 to $16 per sq ft installed, so a typical two-car driveway of about 600 sq ft lands between roughly $6,000 and $9,600. Decorative finishes cost more; resurfacing an existing slab costs less. We publish these rates and quote in writing with no hidden fees.

### help How much does 1,000 sq ft of concrete cost?

expand\_more

For plain installed concrete at $9 to $16 per sq ft, 1,000 sq ft costs roughly $9,000 to $16,000 depending on the application, thickness, and finish. Commercial flooring is lower per foot; stamped and decorative work is higher. We give an exact published-rate quote after measuring.

### help Should I repair or replace my concrete driveway?

expand\_more

Often you can repair. About half the driveways called in for replacement can be repaired at roughly 40 percent of the cost through crack repair, lifting, or resurfacing. If the slab is heaved, badly spalled, or sitting on a failed base, replacement is the better long-term choice. We assess and tell you honestly.

### help How long does concrete take to cure before I can drive on it?

expand\_more

You can usually walk on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours and drive on a residential driveway after about 7 days. Full design strength develops over 28 days. We use curing compounds and, in cold weather, Type 30 high-early cement to keep timelines on track.

### help What is your warranty on concrete repair?

expand\_more

Every installation, including repairs, carries our 2-year workmanship warranty. We are licensed, WSIB-insured, and carry $2M general liability, so the work is backed and covered.
